Butler College builds on strong start


Butler College artist's impression.Principal Armando Giglia said he had had a “hectic but fantastic” first year at the helm of the northern suburbs secondary college which opened in February 2013.
Last year the college had 290 students in Year 8 and this year has 611 Year 8 and 9 students as it continues its expansion to be a comprehensive secondary school up to Year 12.
Major building projects worth $43.4 million are now underway to complete the second stage of the college and also add extra space for 2015 when Year 7 students join secondary schools.
“We are building a great college community here and parents are very supportive,” Mr Giglia said.
“Last year’s students, now in Year 9, are continuing to develop their sense of responsibility as the foundation students of this college.
“New courses for students to study this year include mechatronics – a combination of mechanical and electrical engineering – and marine studies with scuba diving.”
When the building works are completed, the college will have an extra three classroom blocks, enhancements to the main senior school learning area, and additions to the sports hall including a new fitness centre. Students will have access to more specialist teaching facilities for visual arts, media, music and information technology learning.
Other features in the building works are more parking bays, two hard courts for sport, a hockey field and refurbishments to four science laboratories, engineering studio, food studio and textiles and human development area.
“Our students are wearing their uniforms with pride – and every family who comes through our gates becomes part of the Butler College community,” Mr Giglia said.


Student suspensions down but schools urged to take tough line

The proportion of WA public school students being suspended fell for the fourth straight year in 2013, new Department figures reveal.
The figures released today show 4.3 per cent of all students were suspended at least once, down from 4.8 per cent in 2010, while the number of exclusions more than halved in the same period, from 54 to 20.

But Director General Sharyn O’Neill said she was concerned that there had been a slight increase in the number of suspensions for physical assault and intimidation of staff, saying this reflected a growing social trend.
“I’m pleased that some of our strategies are starting to take effect and that, despite a significant increase in student enrolments, 430 fewer students were suspended in 2013 than in 2010,” Ms O’Neill said.
“However, we are seeing more physical intimidation, violence and lack of respect for authority in society as a whole, and schools reflect society.
“I back teachers 100 per cent to take firm action and that includes involving the police if they feel they have been the victim of an assault. It’s not acceptable and teachers should not put up with it.
“To put the figures into context, a physical assault on a staff member can range from a student roughly brushing past someone in a corridor, to, on a rare occasions, a more overt attack.”
Ms O’Neill said the Department and individual schools were always looking at new initiatives to address poor student behaviour, with in-school suspension becoming an increasingly popular option.
“We have 12 behaviour centres, more psychologists, and we’re doing more restraint training for teachers,” she said.
“However, it’s very hard to look at it as a global problem because it comes down to a number of individual students who have real problems in their lives.
“Students should be ashamed if they’re suspended and parents should be concerned, because it indicates that all the things we have in place for those children are not working. So we’ll continue to work very closely with those individuals and I encourage parents and the wider community to support us with this.”
